Celia joined Cedar Animal Hospital in 2024 as a Veterinary Assistant. She has an associate degree in Biology, and several years of experience in the field while working at two other veterinary clinics and two zoos. “I always have had a passion for animals,” said Celia. “I chose this career path to help alleviate the suffering of as many animals as I can. I truly believe they deserve the absolute best care.”

VETERINARY ASSISTANT
Lorraine joined Cedar Animal Hospital in 2024 as a Veterinary Assistant. She has a certification in veterinary medical applications and is currently working on her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Pre-Veterinary medicine at Ferris State University with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. “I chose this career path because I had always wanted to be a vet,” explained Lorraine. “I tried human medicine, but it was not my passion.”

FINANCE DIRECTOR
Dianne Bennett serves as finance director at Cedar Animal Hospital. She came to work here in March of 2017. She has an MBA in Finance and is an experienced CPA (Certified Public Accountant). Why did she come to Cedar Animal Hospital? “Dr. Nauta asked if I had time in my schedule to help,” she said.

Thomas joined Cedar Animal Hospital in 2024 as a licensed veterinary technician. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-professional health at Michigan Technological University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Nursing at Michigan State University. “I always wanted to work with animals and went through middle school and high school with the intention of going to veterinary school,” explained Thomas. “I fell in love with the vet tech position while shadowing at vet clinics and decided to pursue veterinary nursing instead.”

Abbey Kern joined the Cedar Animal Hospital staff in 2023 and is one of our licensed veterinary technicians. Samantha joined the Cedar Animal Hospital staff in 2020. She is one of our licensed veterinary technicians. ASSISTANT MANAGER
Debbie Papa started at Cedar Animal Hospital in 2022. She is one of our practice managers and an administrative assistant. She went to Grand Valley State University for Nursing. Papa has spent over 22 years in the veterinary field, with 16 years as a supervisor in 24-hour veterinary emergency services in Virginia Beach. “After a few unfulfilling years in human nursing, and after acquiring our first dog, I knew I was meant to be in animal nursing instead,” she said. “That led me to veterinary emergency services, where I found my fur-ever career.”

ASSISTANT MANAGER
Sabrina Bennett is one of the assistant managers and often acts as the managers on duty (MOD for short). An MOD oversees the staff on a particular shift and makes sure things run smoothly. Sabrina got her bachelor’s degree in healthcare management from Davenport University and joined our staff in early 2023. “I’ve always loved animals and working with them is a lifelong dream,” explained Sabrina. “My pets have been patients here since 2011, and I was thrilled with the opportunity to work at Cedar Animal Hospital.”

COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
Judy Reed joined Cedar Animal Hospital in 2023 as the Social Media Manager. She writes social media posts, articles, and other types of communication. She previously spent 26 years writing for The Cedar Springs Post newspaper, and the last 16 years as its editor. “The paper closed in the fall of 2022, and in early 2023, I was in the process of setting up my freelance business to write about pets, when I found out about the opportunity at Cedar Animal,” explained Judy. “They’ve always taken great care of our family pets, so I was excited to do it.”

Sara Sackett began her work as an assistant manager (manager on duty) here at Cedar Animal Hospital in January of 2023. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Grand Valley State University. “Working to help those in need has always been a calling for me,” said Sara. She worked with kids with developmental disabilities for almost a decade, and when the opportunity to work with animals came along, she took it. “I didn’t think twice. I knew it would be a natural fit for me. Working to give a voice to those in need is what it’s all about for me.”

Kaylee is a 2021 graduate of Baker College of Muskegon. She has a special interest in the area of diagnostics, working with wildlife and zoo animals. When she’s not at work, she enjoys hiking, traveling, and curling up on the couch with her cat. She enjoys watching Disney and Marvel movies! What she loves most about working at CAH is getting the chance to work with wildlife and exotics! Since attending school, they have become her passion.

Alex is one of the bright, smiling faces you see when you visit Cedar Animal Hospital. She started work at Cedar Animal Hospital in 2017, as part of our customer care team. Alex worked in human medicine for several years, but after taking some years off after having her daughters, she realized she wanted more flexibility in her schedule. “This is the perfect fit for my love of medicine and animals,” she explained.

Autumn joined us as a veterinary assistant in March 2022. She attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City for biology, took veterinary technician training at Baker College, and is currently taking vet tech training through Penn Foster. “I have had a passion for veterinary medicine since I was a young girl,” explained Autumn. “I started in the field right after I graduated from high school.”

Dr. Amanda Torres joined Cedar Animal Hospital as an emergency veterinarian in January 2024. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Grand Valley State University; a doctorate from St. George’s School of Veterinary Medicine; and did her fourth year of clinical training at Michigan State University. “I’ve always had a love and passion for animals,” said Dr. Torres, “and I was always intrigued by surgery and medicine.”

Dr. Winnie Mefford graduated from Washington State University in 2023 and began working for Cedar Animal Hospital the same year. “I always loved animals. I developed a passion for biology in high school, so I decided to combine both,” said Dr. Mefford.

Dr. Lawrence Nauta acquired Cedar Animal Hospital in 1993. He is a graduate of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. “I became a veterinarian because I owned my dog for 18-1/2 years, and all I ever wanted to be able to do was help him if he got sick. That was my dream.”

Dr. Taylor Cervantes graduated from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018 and joined the staff at Cedar Animal Hospital the same year. “I fell in love with veterinary medicine while working at a shelter for cats with FELV (Feline Leukemia Virus) and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). I found a passion caring for those animals that usually would not be given a chance,” said Dr. Cervantes.

Dr. Chelsie Simon, DVM graduated from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021 and joined Cedar Animal Hospital the same year. “I have always had a deep love for animals since I was a little girl, so becoming a veterinarian had always been my dream.”

Dr. Samantha Littleson, DVM, received her veterinary degree from Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, and joined the staff at Cedar Animal Hospital in 2023. She previously worked here as an assistant in 2020. “I have always known I wanted to be a veterinarian,” said Littleson. “From the age of three years old, I would wrap up my stuffAed animals with bandages. I began shadowing and working at an animal hospital, and my interest in vet med was solidified when I saw the difference that I could make in an animal’s and their family’s lives.”

Dr. Judy Nauta, co-owner of Cedar Animal Hospital, graduated from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. She has a passion for both animals and people, and her areas of special interest include general cytology, avian and exotic medicine.

Renee is our practice manager and says she loves that she has the privilege to manage such an amazing staff full of caring and compassionate people! She enjoys travel, photography, reading, cooking, and baking. Renee has a degree in baking and pastry arts from Johnson and Wales University. Renee’s three cats, Willow, Heiyew, and Rubeus, hold down her home while she is at CAH.

Mary Lheureux is the hospital administrator. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology from Grand Valley State University and joined Cedar Animal Hospital in January 2021. “I have always loved animals, but the fate of meeting the Nautas and learning about Cedar Animal Hospital brought me to the veterinarian field,” explained Mary DONE. “It was a dream come true to work with both animals and people.”

Joel Tate came to work at Cedar Animal Hospital in 2021 and is the operations and urgent care manager. He has a Bachelor of Science in geography, and a minor in theology. “I had no experience in veterinary medicine, but with the experience I had in management, I decided to give it a go. I haven’t turned back since,” said Tate.

Sally Hoornstra is the Purchasing Manager at Cedar Animal Hospital. She graduated from Lowell High School and then spent five years in the Army Reserve. She came on staff here in 2001. “I decided to work at Cedar Animal Hospital because I’ve always loved animals,” she said.

SHARYN, LVT
LEAD
Sharyn is a familiar face to customers at Cedar Animal Hospital. She is a licensed veterinary technician and serves as our lead outpatient technician. Sharyn received her veterinary technician degree from Baker College in Cadillac. She was with an animal clinic in Big Rapids for 10 years, before joining Cedar Animal Hospital in 2018.
Helsel said she decided to become a veterinary technician because she wanted to help animals and learn more about them. “I want to be somebody that animals know they can trust,” she said.
In her job as lead outpatient tech, Sharyn makes sure things are running smoothly for appointments; keeps the veterinary assistants busy by assigning tasks; trains with the veterinary assistants; and maintains the Idexx lab equipment with weekly cleanings and monthly quality control audits.

“I like the wide range of species we see here,” said Helsel. “I also like the people I work with. The teamwork is great. We step up and help each other a lot.”

Valerie is not only a licensed veterinary technician, but she is also lead hospital surgical technician at Cedar Animal Hospital. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and biopsychology, cognition, and neuroscience, and from Baker College with an Applied Science degree in veterinary technology. “When I was young, my grandma and I found an abandoned kitten that was skin and bones, with crusted eyes. I got to help nurse it back to health, cleaning it up and bottle feeding it, and I loved being a part of giving the kitten its best chance at life,” explained Aryanna. “I knew from that point that I was meant to work in veterinary medicine.”

SIERRA
VETERINARY ASSISTANT
Sierra graduated from Grant HS and currently attends Ferris State University studying pre-veterinary medicine. Her future plans are to specialize in large animals at MSU or Equine in Colorado or Montana. Sierra enjoys all outdoor activities, coffee, and traveling. At home, she has a cat named BeeBee and a hamster named Nugget. She loves working at CAH because the people she works with are passionate about their jobs.
BECKY
Becky works as a licensed veterinary technician at Cedar Animal Hospital. She earned her vet tech degree through Baker College and came on staff in 2020. “I’ve wanted to be in the veterinary field since I was a kid because I’ve always loved animals and spending time with them,” explained Becky. “I chose to be a veterinary technician because I get to spend the most time with the animals, as well as build a relationship with clients.”
What does Becky like about working at Cedar Animal Hospital?
“I enjoy seeing the variety of animals that come into Cedar Animal Hospital—reptiles, birds, canines, felines, and more. Technicians here are also able to do so much in terms of treatments, procedures, client communication, and more, compared to some other clinics,” explained Becky. “We are trusted to do so much, and it is encouraging.”

IVY
Ivy joined the Cedar Animal Hospital team in 2022 as a veterinary assistant. She started through a work-to-school program through her high school, where she went to school for three classes then came to work to learn. “Ever since I was little, I have loved animals,” said Ivy. “Being a veterinary assistant lets me work with animals of all different species, and my team and I can make a difference with our patients. Every day there is something new to learn and do.”
What does Ivy like about working at Cedar Animal Hospital?
“I like the variety of animals we see,” she said, “including ferrets, lizards, birds, ducks, chickens, frogs, cats, dogs, and more. I love all the technology we have, and that we can run things like blood work and urinalysis in-house. I also love the staff. My co-workers are like family.”

ANNMARIE
VETERINARY ASSISTANT
ANNMARIE is currently in her senior year at Sparta High School.
Her special area of interest is equine veterinary medicine.
In her free time, she enjoys riding her horse, hanging out with her family, and playing soccer in the spring.

SHELENA
Shelena began working at Cedar Animal Hospital as a veterinary assistant in May 2022. She said that she developed her skills through on-the-job training at a specialty pet hospital. “I love working with animals and making a difference in their lives,” said Shelena. “And I’ve always wanted to work in an emergency room/critical care setting.”

“The people I work with are really helpful,” said Shelena. “I like that I’m able to continue learning new things, and working with exotics is great. I also love caring for animals overnight.”

TAYLOR
Taylor came to work at Cedar Animal Hospital in 2021 as one our veterinary assistants. She attended Ferris State University and is currently studying at Montcalm Community College. “Animals have interested me since I was little, and I’ve always wanted to help them,” said Taylor.

LISA
Lisa started work at Cedar Animal Hospital as a veterinary assistant in 2021. She obtained a nursing degree from Northwestern Michigan College and worked as a nurse in the human medical field for 46 years. “Soon after retiring, I realized I still wanted to be out there making a difference in people’s lives,” explained Lisa. She loved animals and thought, “What could be better than caring for animals that are such an important part of people’s lives? I was so excited and happy that Cedar Animal Hospital gave me the opportunity to make a difference.”

“I love working with people who are passionate about what they do and have such compassion for every single animal that comes in,” explained Weiss. “There’s a true sense of being part of a family working here.”

CASSIE
Cassie is a veterinary assistant at Cedar Animal Hospital. She joined the team in December 2021 because she wanted to try something new. She received her Associate of Arts degree from Grand Rapids Community College and is studying with Penn Foster under the veterinary technician program. “I decided on this career path a few months after I found my love for helping the community,” explained Frasier. “I already had a love for animals, and it started to fill my heart and become rewarding. It makes me feel I am making a difference and I enjoy making difficult times feel less stressful for clients.”
What does Cassie like about working at Cedar Animal Hospital?
“I love the whole team,” said Cassie. “Everyone watches out for each other and truly puts in their best effort. It feels like a second family. I love the bond and relationships we create with our clients and their pets.”

DIANA
Diana is that friendly face many of the customers first see at Cedar Animal Hospital. She has been a greeter and cleaner here since 2018, and said it was her love of animals that brought her here. “I worked here before, in boarding, for six or seven years, and I missed it,” said Diana. “So when I got the opportunity to come back, I did.”

The staff, their knowledge, and the friendships she’s created are some of the things she likes about working here. “It’s also close to home, so I can come and work when needed,” she said.

MELODY
BOARDING STAFF
Melody is a member of our boarding & late show team. At home, she has a yellow lab, a palomino named Daisy, and has acquired a stray cat family she’s caring for! Outside of work, she enjoys hanging out with friends and family, fishing, and boating. Currently, Melody is taking lessons in suicide prevention to be able to volunteer with NOMV. In the fall, she plans to attend school at Baker College to become a veterinary technician. One of the many things she likes about working at CAH is all of the animals we see and getting to see the science of veterinary practice.
LEXI
Lexi joined Cedar Animal Hospital in 2023 and works in the boarding area. “It was my love for animals that brought me to Cedar Animal Hospital,” she said.

Eve started with Cedar Animal Hospital in May 2022. She works in the boarding area, as a grooming assistant, and a veterinary assistant. “I have wanted to work with animals for as long as I remember,” said Eve, “and I saw this job as an opportunity to learn and care for animals at the same time.”

Selena has worked for Cedar Animal Hospital since 2021. She is the lead in the boarding area. She also helps out in customer care and sometimes works as a veterinary assistant. “I’ve always had a strong connection with animals,” said Selena. “Since I was a child, I’ve had all kinds of pets. I enjoy helping and caring for any animal—big, small, and everything in between.”
