Vaccinations in Cedar Springs, MI

Vaccines are one of the simplest ways to protect your pet from serious, preventable disease. At Cedar Animal Hospital, our veterinarians build a vaccine plan around your pet’s age, health, and lifestyle, so your dog or cat gets the protection they need without anything they don’t.

Understanding Pet Vaccinations

A vaccine gently prepares your pet’s immune system to recognize a specific disease. If your pet is exposed later, the body is ready to fight back faster and more effectively. Some diseases, like rabies and distemper, can be life-threatening and spread easily, which is why certain vaccines are recommended for nearly every pet. Rabies vaccination is also required by law for dogs in Michigan.

Other vaccines depend on how your pet lives. A dog who goes to boarding, grooming, or dog parks has different risks than a dog who rarely leaves the yard, and an indoor cat has different needs than one who spends time outside. During your pet’s visit, we’ll talk about where your pet goes and who they spend time with, then recommend the vaccines that make sense. Vaccines are given as part of a wellness visit that includes a physical exam, so we can confirm your pet is healthy enough to be vaccinated.

What to Expect at a Vaccine Appointment

Vaccine visits are usually quick and comfortable. Here’s what happens.

1. A Look at Your Pet’s Records

We review which vaccines your pet has had and when. If your pet was vaccinated somewhere else, please send those records ahead of time so we don’t repeat anything unnecessarily.

2. A Physical Exam

Your veterinarian examines your pet to make sure they’re healthy enough for vaccines today. This is also a good time to ask about diet, behavior, parasite prevention, or anything else on your mind.

3. Choosing the Right Vaccines

Based on your pet’s age and lifestyle, we explain which vaccines we recommend and why. Puppies and kittens receive a series of boosters spaced a few weeks apart, while adult pets get boosters on a regular schedule.

4. Aftercare and Reminders

Most pets go home and carry on as usual. Some may be a little sleepy or sore for a day. We’ll tell you what’s normal, what to watch for, and when your pet’s next vaccines are due.

Why Vaccinations Matter

Keeping vaccines current protects your pet, your family, and the other animals in your community.

Protection From Serious Disease

Diseases like parvovirus, distemper, and rabies are difficult and costly to treat, and some can be fatal. Vaccines greatly reduce the risk.

Safety for Your Household

Rabies can spread from animals to people. Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccine current helps protect everyone in your home.

Ready for Boarding and Travel

Boarding facilities, groomers, and training classes usually require proof of current vaccines. If you board with us, dogs need current DHLPC, rabies, Bordetella, and canine flu vaccines, and cats need a current FVRCP vaccine and a negative FeLV/FIV test on file.

When Your Pet May Need Vaccines

Call us to schedule if:

  • You’ve just brought home a new puppy or kitten
  • You’ve adopted an adult pet and don’t know their vaccine history
  • Your pet is overdue for a booster
  • You’re planning to board, travel, or start training classes
  • Your pet’s lifestyle has changed, such as more time outdoors or around other dogs

What About Exotic Pets?

Most birds, reptiles, and small mammals don’t need routine vaccines the way dogs and cats do, though some species, like ferrets, do. Our veterinarians have training in exotic pet care and can tell you exactly what your pet needs at their wellness visit.

Vaccinations: Frequently Asked Questions

Which vaccines does my pet need?

It depends on your pet’s species, age, health, and lifestyle. Most dogs and cats need core vaccines such as rabies, and others are recommended based on where your pet goes and who they spend time with. Your veterinarian will walk you through the options at your pet’s visit.

When should my puppy or kitten start vaccines?

Puppies and kittens start a vaccine series during their first months, with boosters a few weeks apart. Bring your new pet in as soon as possible after they come home so we can begin. Call (616) 696-1212 to schedule.

Are there side effects from vaccines?

Most pets have no problems or are just a little tired or sore for a day. Rarely, a pet may have swelling of the face, hives, vomiting, or trouble breathing. If you see any of these signs, call us right away at (616) 696-1212.

What vaccines are required for boarding?

To board with us, dogs need current DHLPC, rabies, Bordetella, and canine flu vaccines. Cats need a current FVRCP vaccine and a negative FeLV/FIV test on file. Records must be on file before you book your pet’s stay.

How much do vaccinations cost?

The cost depends on which vaccines your pet needs and whether other services are included in the visit. Please call (616) 696-1212 for an estimate. We accept cash, check, major credit cards, CareCredit, and Scratchpay.
