Orthopedics in Cedar Springs, MI

When your pet starts limping, hesitates at the stairs, or can’t jump into the car anymore, it is worth finding out why. At Cedar Animal Hospital, we evaluate and treat bone, joint, and ligament problems for pets from Cedar Springs and all over West Michigan. Dr. Lawrence Nauta, one of our co-owners, focuses much of his continuing education on orthopedics.

Understanding Veterinary Orthopedics

Orthopedics is the area of veterinary medicine that deals with the musculoskeletal system: bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and the muscles that move them. Orthopedic problems can be sudden, like a fracture after a fall or a torn knee ligament during play, or they can develop slowly, like hip dysplasia and arthritis that worsen with age.

Because pets can’t tell us where it hurts, orthopedic care starts with a careful exam and the right imaging. From there, treatment ranges from rest, weight management, and pain control to laser therapy and surgery. Our hospital offers a range of orthopedic procedures, including ACL repair, fracture and dislocation repair, FHO surgery, and kneecap dislocation repair, so many pets can be diagnosed and treated without leaving the building.

What to Expect During an Orthopedic Evaluation

Every orthopedic case at Cedar Animal Hospital starts with understanding exactly what is causing your pet’s discomfort.

1. History and Gait Observation

We’ll ask when the problem started, whether it came on suddenly or gradually, and what makes it better or worse. Watching your pet walk and move helps us see which limb is affected and how much.

2. Hands-On Orthopedic Exam

Your veterinarian carefully feels each joint and limb, checking range of motion, stability, swelling, and areas of pain. Specific tests can reveal problems such as a torn cranial cruciate ligament or a kneecap that slips out of place.

3. Imaging

X-rays show bones and joints in detail, and our in-house CT scanning gives a three-dimensional view for more complex cases. Having CT on site means we can move from diagnosis to a treatment plan without sending you elsewhere.

4. Treatment Plan

Depending on the findings, your veterinarian may recommend rest and medication, weight management, laser therapy, joint supplements, or surgery in one of our surgical suites. We’ll explain the options, expected recovery, and what each means for your pet’s comfort and mobility.

Why Orthopedic Care Matters

Bone and joint problems affect how your pet moves, plays, and feels every day. Addressing them early can protect long-term mobility.

Pain Relief

Orthopedic pain is often hidden. Many pets become more active and cheerful once their pain is properly treated.

Protecting the Other Joints

A pet that favors one leg puts extra strain on the others. Treating the original problem helps prevent new injuries, such as a second torn ligament.

Slowing Arthritis

Joint instability and injuries can lead to arthritis over time. Timely treatment and weight management help keep joints working well for longer.

Signs Your Pet May Have an Orthopedic Problem

Schedule an evaluation if your pet shows:

  • Limping or holding up a leg
  • Stiffness after rest, especially in the morning
  • Reluctance to jump, climb stairs, or play
  • Swelling around a joint or pain when touched
  • Skipping or hopping steps while walking or running

If your pet has been hit by a car, fallen, or suddenly cannot bear weight on a leg, call us right away. Urgent and emergency care is available 7 days a week.

Orthopedic Care for Every Stage of Life

Young, active pets are more likely to have injuries and developmental problems, while senior pets often need help managing arthritis. Our team tailors care to your pet’s age, size, and lifestyle and stays with you through recovery and rechecks.

Orthopedics: Frequently Asked Questions

What orthopedic problems do you treat?

We evaluate and treat a wide range of bone and joint problems, including torn cruciate ligaments, fractures and dislocations, kneecap dislocation, hip problems, and arthritis. Procedures we offer include ACL repair, fracture repair, FHO surgery, and kneecap dislocation repair. Call (616) 696-1212 to schedule an evaluation.

Does every limp need surgery?

No. Many orthopedic problems improve with rest, pain medication, weight management, and laser therapy. Surgery is recommended when it offers the best chance of lasting comfort and function, such as for many ligament tears and fractures. Your veterinarian will explain all reasonable options.

Why might my pet need a CT scan?

X-rays are often enough, but some joints and fractures are easier to understand in three dimensions. Our in-house CT scanning gives that detailed view, which can help with planning surgery or diagnosing problems that don’t show clearly on X-rays.

What should I do if my pet suddenly can’t walk on a leg?

Keep your pet calm and confined, avoid giving human pain medications, and call us right away at (616) 696-1212. Urgent and emergency care is available Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 10 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 6 PM.

How much does orthopedic care cost?

Costs vary widely depending on whether your pet needs an exam and X-rays, CT, medication, or surgery. Please call for an estimate. We accept cash, check, major credit cards, CareCredit, and Scratchpay, and we provide the records and invoices you need for a pet insurance claim.
